Mark Keszler takes kids to Kansas last summer

By Marissa S

November 27, 2007

The book In Cold Blood by Truman Capote is a book about a family of four that was murdered by two killers that drove across Kansas attempting to rob this wealthy and well respected family.

Many of the students chose to read the book on their own. The kids really understood and liked the book. Mr. Mark Keszler took it upon himself and asked the School Board for permission to take 8 kids to Holcomb, Kansas. It was passed and off they went. The students that went were Jase D, Emily W, Morgan B, Monica D, Marylee Y, Robbie H, Titus K, and Teri B. Mr. Keszler and Ms. Vonnie Brown were the chaperones.

They were on the trip for a total of 19 hours, leaving at 3 a.m. and getting back at 10 p.m. Being able to sit and talk with Mr. Keszler was very interesting. All the things that they were able to do were amazing. They were able to talk with the current District Judge and look at court documents of the case. One of the chilling moments of the trip was when they were standing in front of the Clutter family graves, knowing that they had the story of the murders.

Mr. Keszler said the friendliness and hospitality of their tour guide, Kevin Bascue was great. When I asked him if he would consider going on another trip he said that if there is enough student interest and board and administration approval he would gladly do it. He also said that he would take as many kids as they can arrange.

I think what Mr. Keszler is trying to say is read the book, you’ll enjoy it.
