Scholarships Available

The following scholarships are available to high school seniors. Some have on-line applications, others have paper applications and these have been placed in senior mailboxes. Updated 12-1-07.
The applications for the 2007 Peter Kiewit Foundation Legacy Scholarship Program have been given to those seniors who qualify. You must be in the top 20% of your class, have taken the ACT or SAT, and demonstrate financial need. Applications must be postmarked by
January 10, 2008.
The Sam Walton COMMUNITY Scholarship is a non-renewable $1,000 award for the student’s first year of undergraduate study at an approved accredited college or university. To find out if you qualify or to apply go to www.walmartfoundation.org. Application deadline is January 14, 2008.
Board of Trustees Scholarship to attend one of the Nebraska State College schools is available. This is for students with a 25 ACT or above, who are in the top 50% of their graduating class and plan to attend Chadron, Wayne or Peru State College. Application deadline is January 15, 2008. Applications will be placed in mailboxes of seniors who qualify and will be available in the counselor’s office.
Elks Scholarship applications are in the senior mailboxes. They are:
Most Valuable Student Scholarship: This program has local, state and national awards ranging from $200 to $1000 at the local level with additional awards possible for the top three local finishers forwarded to the next level of competition. For this program only, many students benefit from using one copy of the application as a work copy and a second copy to be submitted. This produces a more polished look for those brochures that go on to state and national competition. Deadline to apply is January 11, 2008. The application can be downloaded from the Elks Grand Lodge web-site at http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm.
Nebraska Elks Association Vocational Scholarship: The local award is $200 each to the best-qualified boy and girl. These winning applications are also forwarded to district and state competitions where additional scholarships may be awarded. This award is specifically designed to support students planning on attending vocational/technical training programs of two years or less. The application can be downloaded from the state lodge’s website at http://webpages.charter.net/nelks/. Application deadline is January 11, 2008.
WesternNebraskaCommunity College Grants: Local scholarships for this program vary from $100 up to $750. These awards are only applicable for use at WNCC. However, students receiving these awards who attend another primary institution have used these awards to pay for summer school and on-line courses through WNCC. Deadline for application is 01/11/08.
Winnie Sipp Memorial Scholarship: One local award of $300 is available for students to use at the institution of their choice. January 11, 2008 is the deadline for application.
Golf Scholarship: One local award of $200 is available. Applicants must be members of their local high school golf team during their senior year. The applications of one boy and one girl are advanced to the state competition. January 11, 2008 is the deadline for application.
Past Exalted Ruler Scholarship: One local award of $100 is available. The applications of one boy and one girl are advanced to the state competition.
Mensa Foundation offers nearly $60,000 in scholarships annually. At least one $300 scholarship will be awarded to someone in the Nebraska-Western Iowa Mensa area. Norma Ross Walter Scholarship Program of the Willa Cather Foundation offers a scholarship to provide financial assistance to female graduates of Nebraska high schools who are planning to enroll as English majors at accredited colleges or universities. Applications have been place in female senior mailboxes. Deadline for application is January 31, 2008.
Southeast Community College Scholarships are now on line. They have campuses in Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford. Apply on line at https://scc.scholarships.nelnet.net/ before February 1, 2008.
Wheatbelt Public Power District and Chimney Rock Public Power District sponsors the Basin Electric Scholarship for their customers. Applications have been placed in the mailboxes of Seniors who qualify. They are also available from the counselor’s office. Deadlines for application are February 15, 2008 for WPPD and February 1, 2008 for CRPPD. High School graduates who are attending college may also apply for this scholarship if they or their parents are customers of Wheatbelt PPD or Chimney Rock PPD.
NAIFA Scholarship applications are now in senior mailboxes. Applicants must be interested in furthering their education, with preference given to candidates interested in courses of study such as education, business/management/finance, marketing/sales, or actuarial studies; and preference given to those who attend a Nebraska university, state or community college. Deadline for application is February 15, 2008.
Nebraska Machinery Co. will provide up to six Sponsorships and 5ive $1000 Scholarships from Caterpillar through their Caterpillar Foundation for students wishing to enter the Diesel Technology Program through CentralCommunity College. For more information contact the high school counselor’s office or the Nebraska Machinery service manager at a store near you (Scottsbluff – Greg Enlow – 308 220-3426 or 800-898-6238).
MIDWEST STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMhelps improve access to education by providing more affordable opportunities for students to attend out-of-state institutions. States involved in this exchange are Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. For more information contact the counselor’s office or go to http://msep.mhec.org. This is not a scholarship, but a means to reduce the tuition rate for Nebraska students interested in out of state schools.
The Nebraska Academy of Sciences sponsors a number of scholarships each year for High School seniors planning to attend Colleges and Universities in the State of Nebraska. Please access the website at <neacadsci.org/Info/Scholarship.htm> to download the scholarship description, requirements, and the application summary page. Scholarship applications are due in the Academy office by March 1, 2008.
2008 Careers in Agriculture Scholarship applications are available in the HS office or on the web at www.agriliance.com in the careers section or at www.mbrservices.com. This scholarship is for students interested in pursuing a career in agriculture. Deadline for application is March 1, 2008.

2007 Maynard Jensen American Legion Memorial Scholarship Program. To be eligible you must be a high school graduate in the spring of 2008 or be enrolled full time in a (Nebraska)post-secondary institution as of the application deadline date of March 1, 2008. You must also be sons or daughters, grandchildren or great-grandchildren, adopted or stepchildren of members of the Department of Nebraska, The American Legion or POW, MIA, KIA or any veteran that was a current American Legion member at the time of death. The Christian Connector provides a FREE Christian college information service as well as a $2,500 Christian college scholarship drawing. Students can simply log onto www.christianconnector.com to request information and automatically be entered into the $2,500.00 scholarship drawing.
Nebraska Aviation Trades Association offers a scholarship to Nebraska high school seniors or individuals continuing their education. Applications are available in the High School office. The application must be received by the scholarship committee by March 15. 2008.
The American Legion Auxiliary also offers a variety of scholarships. Please check the file in the office to see if you quality for one. Deadline for application is March 15, 2008.
Swanson Russell Associates is offering a scholarship ($500) to a graduating senior who will be majoring is Advertising, Marketing, Mass Communications, Communications Studies, Public Relations, Journalism or Graphic Design/Desktop Publishing. Applications can be printed from their Website www.sramarketing.com and are available in the HS office. Deadline for application is March 16, 2008.
The Susan Thompson Buffet Foundation provides scholarships to NebraskaHigh School students who plan to attend a college, university, community or technical school that is part of the Nebraska public college system. Scholarships are for tuition and fees up to $3,200 per semester. For more information about this scholarship go to www.buffettscholarships.org. The deadline for application is April 10, 2008.
Virginia Smith Endowment Scholarship applications have been place in all Senior mailboxes. This $1000 scholarship is awarded to a BridgeportHigh School student graduating in May of 2007. Applicants must have a 2.0 GPA or higher and be attending a Nebraska college or university. This student must not receive another scholarship of equal or greater value. Applications must be turned in to the Guidance Office by April 20, 2008.

The Common Application for admission is the recommended form of 300 selective colleges and universities for admission to their undergraduate programs. To apply on line or to print an application, go to www.commonapp.org.
