BPS Students Perform Above State Average

by Melissa Krason

August 30, 2010

Initial results of the Nebraska State Accountability Reading (NeSA-R) test are now available. Students in grades 3-8 and 11 participated in the state-wide reading test for the first time last Spring. NeSA-Reading is a one-time, drop-in and check of student performance on the standards. This test replaces STARS, the previous system for measuring student performance on the reading standards.

Student scores placed them in one of three categories; below standard, meets standard, or exceeds standard. Seventy-five percent of our students met or exceeded the standards. This compares to an average sixty-eight percent state-wide. While our student group as a whole performed better than the state average, a couple of grade levels performed well below the state average. Only two grade levels performed slightly below the state-wide average.

This information serves several purposes. It will be the basis for our Federal Adequate Yearly Progress rating and it is also the information used to determine the Persistently Lowest Achieving Schools (PLAS). Both of these ratings will be available to the public in the State of the Schools Report released in October. More importantly, our teachers have received information concerning the performance of individual students. This information will be used to help us to better meet the instructional needs of each student.

Individual student/parent reports will be sent home with students on Thursday, August 26. If you do not receive a report, or if you have any questions, please call Michelle Keszler at 262-1470.
